America's Pastime past its prime for American blackfolk? [Jun. 30th, 2008|09:41 am]

Just thought I'd ask here, because I was reminded of a trend that I know has been discussed before. Has baseball passed American blackfolk by, or vice versa? This morning, when listening to the sports report on my local hip hop/R&B station, I realized that despite it being the presumptive sport of the summer, they had nothing to say about baseball, and haven't in recent memory on that segment (when I get to listen to it). Today's talk was tennis, track and field, and fantasy football. In contrast, during football or basketball season, they will often come back with updates on notable games from the night before, especially coming back from a weekend. On the one hand, we don't have a local team, as we do with basketball and football, but beyond that, is Black America over baseball? Are you over baseball?

Baseball will forever be my favorite sport.

That said, some time ago it became a "White people's sport" and lost popularity. Which I find funny, because I know folks who watch golf and tennis religiously because of a combination of 2 1/4 prominent Black people between the two sports.

I've never been too big of a fan of baseball, but I never (and still don't) thought it had anything to do with me being black. Its notable absence on the morning show was what brought it to mind, though.
